Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski has announced the arrival of her first child with her husband, Sebastian Bear-McClard.
Emily shared a photo that showed her nursing her newborn baby and revealed their name, Sylvester Apollo Bear. Sylvester is an English name that means “From the Forest,” while Apollo is a Greek named that means “Destroyer.” Emily shared that her child, whose nickname is Sly, arrived on March 8th. “Sly arrived 3/8/21 on the most surreal, beautiful, and love-filled morning of my life,” she wrote in her caption.
The model announced her pregnancy in October of 2020 in an essay written for Vogue. In her essay, she discussed how they are approaching the topic of gender with her child. “When my husband and I tell friends that I’m pregnant, their first question after ‘Congratulations’ is almost always ‘Do you know what you want?’ We like to respond that we won’t know the gender until our child is 18 and that they’ll let us know then. Everyone laughs at this. There is a truth to our line, though, one that hints at possibilities that are much more complex than whatever genitalia our child might be born with: the truth that we ultimately have no idea who—rather than what—is growing inside my belly. Who will this person be? What kind of person will we become parents to? How will they change our lives and who we are? This is a wondrous and terrifying concept, one that renders us both helpless and humbled.”
Throughout her pregnancy, Emily has been embracing her changing body, sharing beautiful images of her growing baby bump. In fact, Emily is set to come out with a book titled My Body sometime this year. Her book is a collection of essays that focuses on what it means to be a woman and a commodity, how men treat women, and why women permit it. Editor Sara Bershtel, who works for the publisher, shared about the book, “Emily Ratajkowski reveals herself to be devastatingly honest, nuanced, and strong — I’m not surprised that she thinks of herself first as a writer. I also admire how outspoken she is, how political, and how unafraid – what force she’ll be!”
Congratulations to Emily on the arrival of her first child and for the launch of her new book. We wish her all the best as she embracing all of these exciting changes in her life.
