Actor George Clooney, who turned 60 in May, opened up in a rare interview about becoming a father to twins four years ago. The star of the 2020 film The Midnight Sky spoke candidly about his decision to become a dad during an interview on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron.

George, who was notoriously regarded as a confirmed bachelor for most of his career, tied the knot with barrister Amal Clooney, née Alamuddin, in 2014 in Venice. The couple welcomed a set of boy-girl twins, Alexander and Ella, in June of 2017. George and Amal keep their children largely out of the public eye and don’t often speak on their family. Now, George is giving his fans an inside look at how he ultimately decided to tie the knot and become a father.

George admitted in his interview that prior to meeting Amal, he had no intention of settling down. “Listen, I didn’t want to get married. I didn’t want to have kids. And then this extraordinary human being walked into my life, and I just fell madly in love. Then I knew from the minute I met her that everything was going to be different.”

George and Amal first had a conversation about starting a family one year after their wedding. Amal brought up the subject by saying, “We are awfully lucky in life,” George recalled. “And I said, ‘Yeah, we are lucky we found each other.’ She said, ‘Seems like that luck should be shared with some other folks.’” The Ocean’s Eleven star said he “thought about it for maybe a minute” but didn’t think either of them had “made a decision” at the time.

Ultimately, George gave into the idea. “And then I just said, ‘Well, I mean, if you’re in,'” he recalled, “and she said, ‘I think we should try.’ I have to say it was very emotional because I really was convinced that wasn’t my lot in life and was comfortable with that.”

Ending up with twins was a surprise in and of itself. George revealed that he was “kind of up for one. I didn’t know I’d have twins.” It looks like twins run in the family, as the actor shared that Amal’s “sister has twins, and I was gobsmacked because… I was kind of up for one… I love it now and thank God they have each other during the pandemic.” We’re happy to hear that George is loving being a father to Alexander and Ella!
