Dear Jennifer,

First off, I want to say I love your website. I am an aspiring author who has always been curious about names anyway, and Baby Names is such a help. Second, I was wondering about the name Emrys. I’ve seen it several places, and I know it’s Welsh, but I noticed it was not listed here. Do you think you could help me?

Thank you,
Aliana

Dear Aliana,

Thank you for your kind words! I love hearing about other authors using our site. Also, make sure to check out CharacterNames.com for character naming tips.

As for the name Emrys, it is the Welsh form of the name Ambrose, which in itself is a form of the Latin Ambrosius or Greek Ambrosios. The name is traditionally male and means “Immortal.” The mythical wizard character Merlin’s full name in Welsh is Myrddin Emrys (or Merlin Ambrose).

We have now added it to the website. Thank you for writing! It’s a great name with a lot of history.

Sincerely,
Jennifer
