As 2025 unfolds, baby name trends are taking a captivating turn, blending timeless charm with fresh inspiration. This year, we’re seeing a rise in names that evoke the enchanting simplicity of cottage core aesthetics, drawing from nature, vintage charm, and pastoral beauty. Alongside these rustic favorites, names rooted in Greek mythology and lore are making a powerful resurgence, celebrating the timeless allure of gods, goddesses, and epic tales. Adding an air of romance and elegance, Italian-influenced names are capturing hearts with their melodic cadence and rich cultural heritage.
Baby naming trends are proving to be similarly interesting, ranging from super popular names staying strong to names that have been traditionally unique. Boy, girl, and crossover (gender-neutral) names are now showing us that parents are not interested in being told what to do but, instead, are forging their own paths forward.
Baby Name Trends for Girls in 2025
Cottage Core Names
Trends for girls in 2025 include what we like to call “Cottage Core” names – names from nature. Indeed, flower names have been growing in popularity over the last decade, but the names themselves have become more unique. Of course, we still see the strength of Lily and Daisy among our users’ lists, but we also see people ranging into more unusual naturistic names. Juniper and Marigold are two such names that are exhibiting this trend yet are off the beaten path. Other Cottage Core names include birds, such as Wren and Dove, as well as foliage, such as Acacia and Clover.
Strong Fictional Heroines
Another trend for girl naming includes representing fictional heroines. This includes some names from popular television shows such as “Only Murders in the Building,” the star actress of which, Selena Gomez, plays the alliteratively named Mabel Mora. We also have seen Aria/Arya popular since the release of the books and television series “Game of Thrones” and “Pretty Little Liars.” Eloise is a name from the children’s book by the same name as well as the television show “Bridgerton,” the latter of which has also suggested other heroine names, such as Penelope and Violet. Disney Princesses, such as Aurora from “Sleeping Beauty” and Fiona from “Shrek,” have also become more popular baby names lately.
Goddess & Mythical Names
Mythical names, especially of Greek origins, have also been strong both in spirit and baby naming of girls. Trending names have included mythical Greek goddesses, such as Athena (the goddess of wisdom and war) and Persephone (the goddess of spring and the queen of the underworld}. Other Greek heroine names include Andromeda, Cassandra, and Calista. Freja, the Norse goddess of love, has also seen an uptick in baby girl name popularity.
Baby Name Trends for Boys in 2025
Italian & Celtic Names
This year’s trends for boy names have been focused on origins of Irish and Latin/Italian origins. This includes the ultra-popular Liam, which has been number one for boys for the last several years on the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Popular Baby Names lists. No matter what the predictions, Liam does not seem to be moving off the list of popular boy names anytime soon. Other hot Irish/Celt names include Declan, Callum, Lachlan, and Rowan. The name Cillian has become more prevalent alongside the relevance of Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who won the best actor nod from the Academy Awards in 2023 for his role in “Oppenheimer.”
Strong on the boy name lists are also names of Latin/Italian origin, such as Enzo and Elio. Italian names of well-known artists and authors, such as Leonardo, Rafael, and Dante, are growing in numbers. Italian versions of saints are also becoming more trendy, including Luca (Luke) and Mateo (Matthew).
Grandpa Names
Grandpa names are also gaining in popularity, which is not surprising since the grandma trend became huge a few years back and remains a popular girl name trend. Grandpa names, such as those from the 1900s, include Theodore, Edgar, and Caleb, as well as August, Otto, and Felix.
Fantasy, Mythical & Lore
Lastly for boys, we are seeing a big trend among fantasy names, such as Maximus and Atreus. There are also Greek god names such as Ajax and Achilles. We can’t forget the one name skyrocketing up the charts, so to speak: Anakin, for Anakin Skywalker of the “Star Wars” Universe.
Crossover/Gender-Neutral Baby Name Trends in 2025
Surnames
Surnames remain the trendiest crossover (gender-neutral) names, such as Avery, Quinn, Cameron, and Bellamy. The names Harper and Madison both were huge a few years back and seemed to spark the trend for people to look on their family trees for interesting last names to move to first name status. Other interesting surnames representing this trend include Beckett, Lennox, Sawyer, and Fallon.
Dictionary / Noun Names
Dictionary names are also widespread trends for gender-neutral names, such as Raven, Winter, River, and Piper. Place names such as Aspen, Dakota, Brooklyn, and Everest, also remain strong. One particularly strong type of dictionary word, colors, are popular among crossover names, including Sage, Indigo, Navy, Azure, and Blue.
Whether by picking up a dictionary or looking at your family tree, the trends of baby naming in 2025 are becoming vast. Although some of these trends remain strong, such as Irish names for boys and dictionary crossover names, newer trends include those using names of Italian origins and those of Greek gods and goddesses, are paving the way to baby names of the future 5 – or 50 – years.
