Actress Samira Wiley, most notably known for starring in The Handmaids Tale and Orange Is The New Black has announced that she and her wife, screenwriter Lauren Morelli, have welcomed their first child together! Samira kept Lauren’s pregnancy a secret until revealing her child’s arrival into the world.
Samira shared the news on Mother’s Day in a post praising her wife for carrying and birthing their child – a baby girl!. “Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after laboring for almost 3 days gave birth to our first child—our gorgeous daughter, George.💜 Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for.”
Samira shared that her daughter was born on April 11th and they’ve named her George Elizabeth! The Handmaids Tale star appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel Show last night and discussed the inspiration behind her name choice.
Samira told Jimmy that people were “very confused” by the name George for a girl. The actress shared, “I just really like the name. I just think it’s really cute.” She joked that she wished she “had some really in-depth story to tell people about George,” but it was really just a name she and Lauren liked! She discussed doing some research on the name and “found out in the 1800s it was a girl’s name.” She added, “But people don’t believe me when I say that.”
In the Nancy Drew series, there is a female character named George. Celebrity couple Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan also have a daughter named George. Perhaps the name could start to gain popularity as a girl’s name!
Congratulations to Samira and Lauren on welcoming their daughter into the world! We wish them all the best as they continue their journey as parents.
