Actress Anna Kendrick has been vocal in the past about not wanting to become a mother. In her 2016 memoir Scrappy Little Nobody, the Pitch Perfect star shared, “Motherhood isn’t for me.” Now, the actress is opening up again about her decision and the conversations she’d had with others about her choice.
In an interview with Flow Space, The Simple Favor star discussed a common phrase people use for someone who doesn’t want children. “I was thinking recently about a phrase I’ve heard men say about their desire to have children in the future, and it occurred to me: I don’t think I’ve ever heard a woman say that. And the thing they’ll say is, ‘Yeah, maybe one day — a couple of kids running around.’” She went on to note the double-standard sharing, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard a woman say that! Because it paints a certain visual, yes?”
In describing the visual, the Trolls star explained it as, “you come home at the end of your workday, and you put down your proverbial briefcase, and you’re making yourself a cocktail, and a woman in a Laura Ashley dress is out in the yard, and there’s a couple of kids — in white! — running around.” Anna shared why the common phrase strikes a chord with her. “There’s something about that phrase that really starts to rub me the wrong way. It’s like when I hear husbands say they want to ‘help out’ with the kids. And it’s two working parents!”
As someone without kids, the actress feels reserved in discussing parenting thoughts with her friends who are moms. “I always want to kind of say something, and then I’m just like, ‘Well, I’m the childless cat lady. I’m not gonna say s—.’” This interview isn’t the first time the Woman of the Hour star has spoken out about the childless cat lady phrase, most recently used by Donald Trump‘s Vice President pick JD Vance. The Senator used the phrase to describe Vice President Kamala Harris and it caused an uproar from women, including Anna. In a subsequent interview with The Guardian, the actress shared, “I don’t ever think about having kids, so I guess I spend just as little time thinking about weaponizing that.”
