Actress Jennifer Lawrence welcomed her first child earlier this year but little was known about the Don’t Look Up star’s newborn at the time. Jennifer is absent on social media and notoriously private about her personal life. Now, in an interview with Vogue, the actress is revealing details about her newborn and her experience with motherhood.
Jennifer gave birth to her first child with her partner Cooke Maroney, an art dealer, in LA county in February of this year. Jennifer has now revealed that the couple welcomed a son and chose to name his Cy. Cy is named after one of Cooke’s favorite artists, postwar American painter Cy Twombly.
The Causeway star candidly discussed the topic of motherhood in her interview sharing, “It’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, ‘It was amazing from the start’, some people will think, ‘It wasn’t amazing for me at first’, and feel bad. Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away. So I felt so prepared to be forgiving. I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?”
Jennifer continued by sharing how welcoming Cy changed her life. “The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life. I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors. Now I love all babies.” On how she feels personally since becoming a mother, she shared, “My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about. I include my husband in that.”
Jennifer revealed in her interview that she had suffered two miscarriages in the past, reflecting on her experience in light of the overturning of Roe v Wade. She had gotten pregnant during her 20s and had decided to have an abortion, but before she could go through with the procedure, she had a miscarriage in Montreal. She got pregnant again just a few years ago while shooting Don’t Look Up. She and Cooke had been married at the time and wanted a baby, but she miscarried again. When she was pregnant with Cy, she recalled reflecting on her changing body and life sharing, “I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant. Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy. But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?”
Congratulations again to Jennifer and Cooke on the arrival of their first child. And a huge thanks to Jennifer for opening up so poignantly about her experience with motherhood and her no-hold’s-barred interview with Vogue.
