Journalist and TV presenter Katie Couric learned exciting news this weekend. She’s going to become a grandmother! Katie’s daughter Ellie Monahan is expecting her first baby and shared the news with the former TODAY co-host inspired by Taylor Swift.
In a video posted to Katie’s Instagram page, the news anchor sat outside with her daughters Ellie and Carrie. Sitting beside her mom, Carrie passed her a bracelet similar to the beaded friendship bracelets that became a staple during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour this year. Katie had been to the concert and forgot her bracelet, and she thought her daughters were replacing hers. When she gets the bracelet, she begins to read, somewhat struggling as she sounds out, “Brand, brandy, brandy, B, granny.” Then she realizes and reads, “Granny to be.” She laughs before she realizes what it says, her face freezing. Ellie confirmed, “I’m pregnant.” Stunned, Katie replied, “You are? Wow!” Ellie went on to ask her mom, “Are you freaked out?” to which a laughing Katie replied, “No!”
The Taylor Swift-inspired announcement was fitting for the family, as the journalist gushed about attending the Eras tour with her daughters last August. ““his was a once in a lifetime experience I’m so glad I got to share with my girls who each have a PhD in Swiftology. They know every word to every song and every designer Taylor was wearing. We felt so lucky to experience this together.”
The Katie Couric Media founder shares her daughters Ellie and Carrie with her late-husband Jay Monahan, who passed away from colon cancer in 1998. Their daughter Ellie tied the knot with her husband Mark Dobrosky in 2021. Ellie got engaged in 2019 and Katie was incredibly excited about the news, sharing a post on Instagram about their engagement. She also revealed that Mark proposed to Ellie using the ring Katie’s late husband Jay had given to her.
