Olympian Michael Phelps and his fiancé Nicole Johnson have welcomed their first child together – a son named Boomer Robert Phelps.
The swimmer took to Instagram with the announcement. Sharing a sweet photo of the new family of three, he cradled the newborn while Johnson looked on from a bed. He wrote: “Welcome Boomer Robert Phelps into the world!!! Born 5-5-2016 at 7:21 pm!!! Healthy and happy!!! Best feeling I have ever felt in my life!!!”
Phelp’s full name is Michael Fred Phelps, II; and it is interesting to note that the couple chose not to carry on the tradition by naming their son Michael Phelps, III.While not commonly used for a child’s name, Boomer is of American origin and means “loud or notable.” Robert is considered a more traditional name, of English origin, meaning “bright fame.”
Phelps and Johnson, who was crowned Miss California USA in 2010, first dated in 2009 before briefly breaking up in 2012. They became engaged in February of 2015 and announced their pregnancy in November.
