Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the arrival of their second child together. Baby number 2 will complete their family. They’ve also shared the touching – and commemorative – name they chose for their newborn.
The couple released a statement today sharing that they welcomed their daughter on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 AM. She was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. at birth. According to the statement, both Meghan and her daughter are healthy and well, and settling in at home.
Prince Harry and Meghan have named their daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. As per the statement, “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”
The name Lilibet is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, who was affectionately given the nickname Lilibet as a child by her family members. After Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband of 73 years, died in April, she placed a handwritten note on top of his coffin and signed the note from “Lilibet.” Prince Philip was thought to be the last person in the Queen’s life to call her by that name. King George VI, the Queen’s father, once said of his two daughters, “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.”
The name Diana is, of course, in honor of Prince Harry’s mother – Princess Diana – who passed away in 1997 following a car crash in Paris. Princess Diana’s other son, Prince William, also used the name in his daughter’s name, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, whom he shares with his wife Kate Middleton.
In addition to their statement, the couple posted a message to their Archewell website. “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”
