At this year’s Met Gala, professional tennis player Serena Williams announced that she and her husband Alexis Ohanian were expecting their second baby together. Now, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has revealed the sex of her little one following a joint baby shower and gender reveal party.
In a video posted to her YouTube page, Serena documented her celebratory event surrounded by family and friends. The athlete dressed according to her guess – “team pink” – by donning herself with pink pants and a white tee, with her baby bump peaking out. In the video, she admitted, “I’m a little nervous because I don’t have any contingency plan if it turns out to be a boy.” The plan was to use a cake to reveal the sex, but Alexis wanted to play a little trick on Serena and the couple’s first baby, 4-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia. Instead of getting a cake with pink or blue in the middle, Alexis got one with yellow. “I’m doing this because I want to troll her and Olympia into thinking that this is the reveal of Jelly Bean,” he shared in the video, using the couple’s pet name for their unborn baby. “She will cut into this cake and probably be disappointed and hopefully appreciate my troll. But, we’ll see. I don’t know if she’s gonna be a professional about it. She might see this cake come out, roll her eyes, and say, ‘This guy had one job and he gave me a goddamn cake gender reveal.’ But we’ll see. there’s a reveal after the reveal.”
Sure enough, when Serena cut the cake to see the yellow, she teasingly shoved a piece of it into Alexis’s face. He then explained, “We are actually going to reveal Jelly Bean’s sex. The way we’re going to do it, though, is with a little style and some spectacular lights.” Alexis then cued the DJ to play music and asked everyone to “draw attention to the heavens.” In the sky, a drone lit up and spelled out the reveal: Girl!
