Actress and singer Aly Michalka is a mom! The Aly & AJ pop duo member announced the arrival of her first baby with her husband Stephen Ringer, a cinematographer. Aly welcomed her baby at her home in Santa Barbara on April 21st.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the iZombie star shared about her home birth, “It was a very peaceful and calm birth, which is really what we were hoping for.” Aly and Stephen, who announced their pregnancy in January, welcomed a baby boy and chose to name him Jack Francis.

The couple chose not to learn their baby’s sex until he was born. They had a small list of names picked out, and Jack was one of them. The name was inspired by the Choosing the baby’s name was simple for the couple. At the top of their brief list of options was Jack, inspired by the “Baby Lay Your Head Down” singer’s grandfather on her mom’s side. “We just kind of knew immediately like, ‘Oh yeah, he’s a Jack,'” Aly explained in her PEOPLE interview. Jack’s middle name Francis is a family name in Stephen’s family. Of baby Jack, the new mom shared, “He’s just a great little guy. He’s got a really special disposition about him.”

Having a home birth wasn’t something the singer initially planned. She had found a “great doctor” she planned to use until she spoke with a midwife and decided an unmedicated natural home birth was the right choice for her. “Every woman’s birth is really their own journey and their own choice. But I do feel like our medical system intervenes in ways that can be really harmful for women and really traumatic for not only themselves, but for their baby. For me, it felt like a great way to be able to avoid that.”

Congratulations to Aly and Stephen on the birth of baby Jack!
