At the start of the year, actress Halle Bailey announced the birth of her first baby, whom she shares with rapper DDG. Pregnancy speculation surrounded The Little Mermaid star for months before she announced her son’s birth. Now, less than a month later, she’s sharing the inspiration behind her newborn’s moniker.

Halle and DDG welcomed a son named Halo in 2023, but his exact birth date is not known. The Color Purple star revealed that the rapper, whose real name Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr, first suggested Halo’s name. “It was actually my boyfriend’s idea,” Halle shared in an interview with PEOPLE. “He’s the one who came up with his name. We just agreed, and we loved it. I love the name Halo.”

Halle was asked in the interview about the connection between her son’s name and the Beyoncé song “Halo,” which was released in 2008 off the singer’s album “I Am… Sasha Fierce.” The actress and singer laughed at the question and replied, “He for sure has a theme song.” Beyoncé has served as a mentor Halle over the years, particularly after Halle was cast to play Ariel in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. The “Break My Soul” singer had experience in that realm having portrayed the role of Nala in The Lion King in 2019. Last year, Halle shared with EW about Beyoncé, “She’s always been very, very complimentary and proud of me, and that means the world coming from her, somebody that’s been one of my biggest inspirations since I was 3. She just told me to stand in my power and to not give up and to know that I can do this and believe in myself.”

A few weeks after announcing the couple, who were first romantically linked in January 2022, welcomed a baby, DDG shared a video on his YouTube page where he discussed his newborn. “Me and Halle had a baby together. I wouldn’t chose no other person in the world to have a child with. We learning. She’s a great mom. Like it’s crazy. She’s amazing.”

Congratulations again to Halle and DDG on becoming parents!
