Journalist Kristen Welker is growing her family! The Meet the Press moderator announced that she and her husband John Hughes are expecting their second baby via surrogate. The little one is expecting to arrive “in the coming weeks.”
This little one will be Kristen and John’s second baby together that they’ve welcomed via surrogate. The couple’s first baby, daughter Margot Lane, was born in June 2021. The couple also shared their second baby’s sex: it’s a boy! Margot is looking forward to becoming a big sister. “Margot has told all of her schoolmates that her parents are getting her a baby brother for her birthday!” the journalist shared with TODAY. For this pregnancy, the couple isn’t using the same surrogate they used for Margot because she recently welcomed her second baby. “She’s still very much a part of our lives,” Kristen explained, “and even reached out to our new surrogate Angelica. We’ve become like this little family.” Of her new surrogate, Kristen shared she is a “literal angel on earth.”
Kristen and John are still working on named for their son but revealed they “have our top contenders.” Margot, however, has given her little brother a nickname already: Lolo. “So we refer to him as Lolo in our household,” Kristen explained. The couple has been working on expanding their family since 2022. The former Weekend TODAY anchor has previously opened up about her journey to conceive and explained her frustrations with growing her family this time around. “We had setbacks — there was more heartbreak — there were days when I asked myself, ‘Why is this so hard for us?’ but we kept pushing forward. We did lose another embryo in this process, and we had to deal with the loss of that and the setback and wondering again, was this going to work for us?”
Despite facing challenges, Kristen shared what she’s most proud of. “What I’m proud of is that John and I didn’t give up. He has always been my rock and I credit our love with getting us through those tough times.” Kristen and John have been married since 2017.
