Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been breaking away from many royal traditions following the birth of their first son Archie, born in May 2019. Now, the couple has made another move that bucks tradition for the British royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan have changed the names of their two children.
Prince Harry and Meghan, once married, were given the royal titles the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Now, the couple has rebranded their family’s surname and their children will now be Archie Harrison Sussex and Lilibet Diana Sussex. Previously, the family had the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, a tradition that was established in 1960. The tradition dictated that future heirs of Queen Elizabeth II would use that surname.
In addition to changing their family’s surname, the couple rebranded their website. Formerly named Archewell.com, the website is now Sussex.com. Another notable change on the website is the discontinued use of the word “royal,” which no longer appears across the site. The website serves as a platform for the couple to showcase their charitable endeavors, the most recent of which being the Inviticus Games, a paralympic-style competitive event headquartered in London, England.
Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and King Charles III taking over the throne, the new line of succession revealed where Archie and Lilibet fall. In March 2023, the royal family reported that Archie and Lilibet are number 6 and 7, respectively, in line for the throne.
