Tennis superstar Serena Williams is adding another bundle of joy to her family! The Olympian chose to announce her exciting news at the Met Gala, one of the biggest events of the year, with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, by her side. Serena appeared at the event in an embellished Gucci gown that showed off her growing baby bump. “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”
For Serena and Alexis, who tied the knot in November 2017, this little one will be their second child. The couple welcomed their first child in September 2017, a daughter named Alexis Olympia who goes by her middle name.
Serena’s pregnancy news comes on the heels of her first-person essay in Vogue this past August where the 23-time Grand Slam tennis star announced her retirement from the sport. In a moment of kismet, the essay begins by Serena sharing a story about how Olympia wants a sibling. “We’re in my car, and she’s holding my phone,” the athlete recalled, “using an interactive educational app she likes. This robot voice asks her a question: What do you want to be when you grow up? She doesn’t know I’m listening, but I can hear the answer she whispers into the phone. She says, ‘I want to be a big sister.'”
Serena also opened up about being very hands-on as a mother, something she hadn’t expected because she had never really thought about having kids before. “In five years, Olympia has only spent one 24-hour period away from me. This past year, while I was recovering from a hamstring injury, I got to pick her up from school four or five days a week, and I always looked forward to seeing her face light up when she walked out of the building and saw me waiting there for her. The fact is that nothing is a sacrifice for me when it comes to Olympia.”
Congratulations to Serena and Alexis on their pregnancy! We wish them all the best as they prepare to welcome another member to their family.
