Singer Rihanna welcomed her first child with rapper A$AP Rocky on May 13th last year. Over the last year, the couple has kept tight-lipped on details of their little one, a baby boy. Now, just days before his first birthday, the child’s name has been revealed.
The Daily Mail obtained the birth certificate for the Fenty Beauty founder’s first child. The couple chose to name their son RZA Athelston Mayers. RZA’s moniker is after the Wu-Tang Clan member by the same name. Robert Diggs went by the stage name RZA, which was a shortened version of his previous stage name The RZArector (the resurrector). The little one shares a middle name with his father, who full name is Rakim Athleston Mayers. Similar to his son, the rapper is named after famous rapper and record producer Rakim.
RZA’s name reveal comes months after the “Umbrella” singer announced she was pregnant with baby number 2. The singer iconically announced her pregnancy at this year’s Super Bowl, marking the first time a pregnant woman has taken the stage during the halftime show at the biggest sporting event of the year.
Following her pregnancy announcement, Rihanna did an interview with British Vogue discussing her life as a new parent. Opening up about RZA’s birth, the “Lift Me Up” singer shared, “It was beautiful. Essentially, from one person I became two. You walk into the hospital as a couple and leave as a family of three. It’s nuts. And oh, my gosh, those first days are insane. You don’t sleep. At all. Not even if you wanted to. We came home, cold turkey, had no one. It was just us as parents and our baby. Man, you’re a zombie for the most part.”
Rihanna shared how her relationship with the rapper has evolved since become parents together. “We’re best friends with a baby. We have to be on the same page, but we’ve always kind of had that in our relationship. Everything changes when you have a baby but I wouldn’t say it’s done anything but made us closer.” The makeup mogul also divulged the bond between her partner and son. “Their connection is undeniable. The second Rocky makes eye contact with him he is on fire. The whole thing they say about sons and moms, it’s a myth. Sons and fathers is crazy. I realised that the validation that you really need as a boy is from your father.”
Congratulations again to Rihanna and Rocky on growing their family! We wish them lots of love as they prepare to welcome a little sibling for RZA.
